This is what I like to read at least once a day. A Big Hairy Audacious Goal. And when it comes from someone like Gopichand I really like it - an industry veteran and super accomplished entrepreneur and technologist.
I wrote this just a few days back: “How to identify a technology wave, ride it, and forget a multi-hundred billion dollar global industry?” referring to the $200 billion + IT services industry created by India over a 35-year period. And we will do it again with AI.
And here in Gopichand talks about how he envisages the India AI story. And I quote the entire piece here. For the original story that he published on LinkedIn, go here.

Action call to create a hundred million AI Jobs in India
The necessary goal of generating a hundred million AI jobs in India demands an extensive and coordinated strategy, targeting both rural and urban populations and spanning multiple sectors.
Focus on Rural Areas for Data Creation and Annotation – 70% of the jobs:
Skill Development in Rural Areas: Set up training facilities in rural regions for skills in data annotation across various formats like voice, image, video, and health data. Collaboration with technology companies will provide essential tools and training materials.
Enhancing Rural Infrastructure: Boost internet access and supply necessary hardware to facilitate data annotation tasks in rural areas.
Platforms for Micro-Jobs: Launch platforms for micro-tasks in data annotation, enabling easier participation from rural communities.
Local Language Inclusion: Promote projects that require processing of India's diverse local languages, making them more relevant and inclusive.
Urban Focus on AI Application Development – 20% of the jobs:
Empowering the Startup Ecosystem: Strengthen support for AI-focused startups through incentives, funding, and incubation programs.
Corporate-Startup Synergy: Encourage collaborations between large tech corporations and startups for technology sharing and mentorship.
Urban AI Development Centers: Establish urban innovation hubs and coworking spaces to provide resources and networking for AI developers.
Involvement of Academia, Government, and Corporates in AI Algorithm Development – 10% of the jobs:
Boosting Research and Development: Invest in university-led R&D and endorse public-private research collaborations.
Policy Development for Ethical AI: Formulate policies promoting ethical AI algorithm development to ensure fairness and impartiality.
Global Collaborative Ventures: Foster partnerships with international entities for knowledge exchange and advanced research.
Research Funding and Grants: Offer grants and financial support for advanced AI research in academic and corporate sectors.
Cross-Sector Strategies:
Educational Reforms for AI: Integrate AI and data science into educational curriculums at various levels to establish a strong foundational knowledge base.
Regulatory Frameworks for AI: Implement clear regulations and ethical guidelines for AI development and deployment.
Public Awareness and Engagement: Enhance public understanding and trust in AI by highlighting its benefits and potential risks.
Sustainable and Inclusive AI Development: Ensure AI initiatives are inclusive and address local and global challenges, aligning with sustainable development goals.
This job creation ambition requires persistent effort over several years and the coordinated involvement of government bodies, educational institutions, the private sector, NGOs, and international allies.

Comment: My earlier piece on the kind of work being done by Karya for Google and Microsoft -in sanitizing and labeling local training data in Indian languages for AI models, thereby improving LLM and increasing wages for rural Indian workers. That piece was covered here.
If you look at these two stories together, you can tell that there is a wave forming that is bringing the future into focus - slightly. It is still a lot hazy but some progress is being made. The path may be strenuous but it is there.
About Me: I write about life, tech, markets, and startups. I provide services on Strategy and Lead Generation for startups.
