Last week NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani had a fireside chat at the NVIDIA AI Summit to discuss the role of AI in transforming India's industrial future and the rise of India as a global leader in the AI space.
Prepare for the Intelligence Revolution
CEO Jensen Huang made a major announcement, stating that NVIDIA and Reliance are partnering to build AI infrastructure in India. With Reliance Jio's incredible network reach and data capabilities combined with NVIDIA's expertise, the two companies aim to bring new homegrown AI-powered solutions to empower technological growth in the nation.
Mukesh who has driven multiple business lines from scratch to a global scale wowed the audience in this interview by talking about how in Indian tradition, the goddess of knowledge Saraswati is highly revered. When you pray to Her, she bestows wisdom and knowledge, also called Vidya in Sanskrit.
And Vidya is already embedded within the very name of the company nVidia. When you propitiate the goddess of learning she bestows vidya, which leads to Sri Lakshmi, the goddess who governs wealth and prosperity. And Mukesh concluded by wishing one and all a wonderful Deepawali the festival of lights, which is the most auspicious time of the beginning of a new year (which incidentally is marked by the worshipping of the Goddess Lakshmi. Listen to the full conversation in the video below.

Once they decide to enter that market, Jio has a history of being the fastest and largest implementor of whatever is required to take a leadership position and dominate that market. In most cases, this happens within 6-10 years of market entry. That is Reliance for you.
If someone can do it, it has to be Reliance
Reliance as a corporation has mastered bringing the most beneficial tech to the 1.4 billion Indian market and offering the best tech at the lowest prices imaginable.
Reliance did this with petroleum and petroleum byproducts, with natural gas, and shale oil. That journey now continues with other energy industries such as solar, wind and Battery tech, and Hydrogen fuel.
Reliance did this with cellular by creating the world’s largest base of 2G and 3G users with RCOM and enabling the cheapest cellular phone call anywhere between 2000-2010.
In 2020, Jio did this again with 5G by rolling out the world’s fastest deployment of 5G SA and bringing down the price per GB of data to about $0.15 (compare that with AT&T at $5 per GB and the global average of $3.5 per GB).
This is in a market that is the largest data consumer (averaging 30 GB per user per month and is projected to reach 64 GB per user per month in the next 2-3 years.
Partnering with Nvidia brings an entirely new level of world-class tech to the AI plumbing layer as the AI data centers required to house this intelligence will ride on Nvidia’s H100s and GB200 (25x performance of H100 but with reduced water consumption).
Jio already has one of the world’s largest cellular and wireline broadband infrastructures (possibly top 3) and is now venturing into satellite broadband (in competition to SpaceX (42K satellites, LEO), OneWeb (648 satellites, LEO), Jeff Bezos’ (Kuiper 3236 satellites). Jio is co-investing in OneWeb for a minority holding ($200 million but the exact ownership is not known).
This is to say that the overall spread and reach of Jio and Reliance Group in general is fully harnessing the massive Indian opportunity and feeding the data-hungry billions with the infrastructure, data, and services required.
Jio is also one of the world’s largest streaming content players in the world with major alliances with Disney, in data with Meta (the video talks about LlaMA Open Source LLMs).
Since Meta has opened up LlaMA for the developer community (7B, 13B, 70B parameter models, released under Apache 2.0 license to run on GitHub repository, this is a massive facility for global developers who want to create their services.
Jio has a deep engagement with Meta already (as an investor in Jio Platforms) and at the chipset level Qualcomm and Intel (device side) and Google and Apple (on the device OS side). It was this ecosystem that delivered the world’s cheapest but full-feature Jio 5G device.
Here is also an interview between Jensen and Business Today’s Tech Editor Ayush which you might find interesting. The question from Ayush was how to ensure India is not relegated to the back office of the world in the upcoming AI industry (as it ended up in the original wave of the IT services industry). For those who want to explore that discussion, the link is here.
India in an Enviable Position:
Notice that the entire global ecosystem is playing here partnering with Jio to create world-class infrastructure for India and now that game is evolving into AI data centers and AI infrastructure zones. This will create intelligence services for the globe.
The move is in perfect sync with the Indian government’s plan to make India an AI powerhouse (follow the Indian government’s AI Strategy and Policy document here)
Watch this space for a lot more magic as these partnerships bear fruit. Just like how the GCC (Global Capacity Centers for MNCs) have become a major driver for the IT industry, expect the AI Services market to go full blast, aided by these powerful underlying infrastructure and service enablers.

I also watched this rather unimpressive interview between Jensen and Akshay Kumar of the Bollywood film industry here. I was looking for something philosophical or life-changing here but found nothing frankly. For those who want to check it out, it’s here.
